They don't choose you.
When you say ‘yes’ to others make sure you are not saying ‘no’ to yourself. — Paulo Coelho
You choose your clients, they don't choose you.
Think about this for a minute: You don't have to accept every client who comes your way.
The biggest shift to becoming a business owner is seeing your clients as people who are paying you to provide a service, instead of bosses who control everything you do.
You get to make the rules with your clients.
You don't go into a restaurant and tell the chef how to cook. And if you do, they have the right to refuse service to you. Your clients should give you the same respect they give every other business. And if they don't, you can fire them!
This shift from a scarcity mindset (believing you have to take every client because they might be the last one) to an abundance mindset (knowing there will always be another client who will treat you and pay you what you deserve) marks the difference between burnt out, overworked, struggling freelancers, and those really living the freedom lifestyle everyone strives for.
Next time a client tells you what to do, or says they won't pay your rates or tries to get in touch with you when you said you'd be out of the office – stand your ground.
Remember, there will always be another client.
